Thor: Love and Thunder (Thor: Love and Thunder) is the fourth solo film about the character of the God of Thunder played by Chris Hemsworth in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Continuing the story after Avengers: Endgame (2019), Thor accompanies the Guardians of the Galaxy on a mission to protect the planets from evil invaders. However, he did not have much motivation after previous losses. The god of Asgard regained his “six pack” physique but was empty inside. He told himself that if he stopped loving, he would no longer have to feel pain.
One day, Thor receives a call for help from Lady Sif (Jaimie Alexander). He joins his friend Korg (Taika Waititi) from the Guardians of the Galaxy and comes to save his old friend. Sif warns Thor about Gorr (Christian Bale), the mysterious villain possessing the Necrosword – capable of slaying the gods. Thor decided to reach out to the gods from other planets, calling them to unite to fight a dangerous enemy.
With the direction of director Taika Waititi, Thor: Love and Thunder is made in the same humorous, satirical style as the previous installment – Thor: Ragnarok (2017).
The New Zealand filmmaker continues to deliver fun, vibrant and colorful work. The visuals and sound are influenced by the hard rock and hair metal genres that were popular in the US in the 1980s. This choice matches Chris Hemsworth’s appearance and the film’s theme. The director once revealed that he wanted the audio-visual stage to be “blooming and noisy with colorful palettes” like this music.
After the success of the third season, Taika Waititi decided to increase the frequency of jokes and satirical episodes. From the beginning to the end, the audience continuously encountered the crew’s purposefully amusing segments. The tempo of the movie is fast, but still enough for the audience to follow the story.
However, unlike Thor: Ragnarok, Waititi failed to balance the comedy element in the film. As a lover of mixing and bending cinematic genres, the director crammed a variety of styles such as psychological, fantasy, romance, horror and action in the script. It all just stopped at the highlights on the background of a comedy work with a duration of nearly two hours. The abuse of funny episodes also makes viewers feel that the film is not serious, without the necessary drama in the climactic action scenes.
Oscar-winning actor – Christian Bale – attracts attention when returning to the superhero genre, playing the role of Gorr – the main villain of this part. He was originally a pious lamb on a distant planet, deceived and manipulated by the gods. After knowing the nature of the Supreme, Gorr sought out the dark power in the Necrosword and set out to take revenge, punishing all the gods in the universe.
The segments about Gorr in the movie are slightly action-oriented, psychological and horror genres. Therefore, the storyline becomes more serious every time this villain appears. However, next to Chris Hemsworth’s somewhat sassy performance, Bale’s performance becomes out of tune in a work that prioritizes humor too much. Similarly, the decision to build a script based on the theme of the corrupting nature of the gods does not match the irony, lack of seriousness of the film.
In addition to the main storyline, the story of Thor: Love and Thunder also revolves around the reunion of Thor and his old love Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). After many years away from superhero-related events, the female doctor suddenly received the power from the divine hammer Mjolnir and became the female superhero Mighty Thor. She accompanied her ex-boyfriend on this mission, but also hid a hidden memory that was difficult to tell him.
Natalie Portman has many bright spots in the film, when her character’s role is no longer just a pink shadow next to the male lead. Star Black Swan has more action scenes, fighting monsters and demons in this part. Mighty Thor has unique moves and powers compared to Thor. Portman also portrayed the romantic comedy scene alongside Chris Hemsworth. The love between the two is one of the film’s attractions.
Despite Portman’s good performance, overall, the team didn’t have much time to rebuild Jane Foster’s character in detail. The character did not appear in the previous part – Thor: Ragnarok, when director Taika Waititi took over the franchise and turned to the humorous genre. Therefore, the female doctor’s personality in this re-export has many changes and contradictions compared to the first two episodes. The way she possesses divine power from the hammer Mjolnir is reasonably explained but not particularly impressive.
Thor: Love and Thunder continues to be a film-style project of Marvel studios in recent years. The work is rich in entertainment, alternating between comedy and action elements, accompanied by epic visuals – sound. The script provides a complete story, and is also a stepping stone for the next events and characters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to appear. The film currently has a 70% “fresh” rating out of 183 critics, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
