“Mad Max” Prequel Set Photos Give First Look At Young Furiosa

.

Anya Taylor-Joy is a young Furiosa in photos from the set of George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road prequel. 2015’s Fury Road brought back Mad Max in memorable fashion after a 30-year hiatus. But most agreed the movie’s real star was not Tom Hardy’s Max himself, it was Charlize Theron’s Imperator Furiosa.

Fans of the Mad Max universe thankfully won’t have to wait another 30 years to revisit the post-apocalyptic desert wastelands of Miller’s imagination. Indeed the director is already at work on a prequel film, which among other things explores the origins of Fury Road’s War Rig-driving Furiosa. But Theron in fact won’t be back in the role she made famous in Fury Road. Instead, The Queen’s Gambit star Taylor-Joy will take on the task of playing a younger version of Theron’s iconic warrior character.

Theron famously sported a buzz-cut when she played Furiosa in Fury Road, but the younger Furiosa still has long locks as can be seen in the above photos. This is an interesting detail, as Taylor-Joy at one point expressed a desire to shave her head for her role in Furiosa, but was reportedly told not to by Miller. Taylor-Joy can also be seen in the new photos wearing a green CGI arm sleeve, indicating that at the point in the story being shot in these images, she has already lost her arm.

It’s already been revealed too that Furiosa’s story sees Taylor-Joy’s character being kidnapped from the Green Place of Fury Road lore by Hemsworth’s biker gang, who later encounter Immortan Joe and his citadel. Of course in Fury Road, Furiosa is one of Immortan Joe’s warriors, but betrays him by kidnapping his wives and stealing off across the wasteland in an ultimately futile attempt to return to the Green Place. The new images featured in the Daily Mail interestingly also afford a glimpse of characters who resemble the War Boys, Immortan Joe’s young brainwashed fighters from Fury Road.

Overall it’s no surprise to see Taylor-Joy looking very ragged in these Furiosa set photos, given that at this point in the story, she has still not taken on the warrior persona she would sport in Fury Road. That warrior persona is indeed something fans are likely to see Furiosa grow into as the prequel movie’s story plays out. Perhaps by the film’s end Taylor-Joy will even get to shed her hair. On the whole these new set photos, and others previously leaked from Furiosa, promise a Fury Road prequel that will send fans roaring right back into the highly-detailed and immersive post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max for yet another wasteland-spanning adventure.
