This spinoff to the Fast and the Furious reunites rivals Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Luke Hobbs (introduced in Fast Five 2011) and Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw (from 2015’s Furious 7). A deadly virus carried by Shaw’s sister, Hattie (Vanessa Kirby), is coveted by Brixton Lore (Idris Elba); Hobbs and Shaw must work together to unpack it before it falls into the wrong hands.
The movie is interesting in establishing Johnson and Statham as two different but equally delicious flavors of traditional masculinity: classic, solid and philosophical Hobbs (he reads Nietzsche as well as self-proclaimed “cold cans” like ice”), while Shaw is deftly subtle, it’s a “champagne problem”. They innocently insult each other but are united by their shared family values.
This is set up in contrast to Elba’s individualistic rogue agent, who has been genetically engineered and calls himself “Black Superman”.
At almost two and a half hours, the film is way too long. Combat montages, on the other hand, are insanely edited, cutting at the compression speed of a trailer. The thunderous rock track only adds to its YouTube awesomeness. It’s sometimes fun to find mindless action, but the lengthy video game-style ending leaves me very angry and tired.
